The performances, on July 17 and 18, were part of the Musicathlon Festival in Beijing, which featured musicians from four continents who aimed to raise the profile of Western classical music in China.

The Musicathlon Festival took place between July 8 and 24 and involved the participation of the Liszt Academy of Music, London's Royal Academy of Music, Helsinki's Sibelius Academy, New York's Juilliard School of Music, Salzburg's Mozarteum, Vienna's Music Academy, the Korean National University of the Arts, the Shanghai Conservatory and the Sidney Conservatory, as well as the festival's organisers: the Central Conservatory of Beijing and the music faculty of Yale University.

Each institution was given two days to put on performances and present lectures or master courses. The Liszt Music Academy performed works by Beethoven, Liszt, Bartók, Kodály and Ligeti for their international audience.

Liszt Music Academy director András Batta said the European classical tradition, which is losing popularity in some parts of the world, could see a renaissance in Asia in the coming decades.
