The leading literary fair this year offers over 50,000 volumes by 600 Hungarian and foreign publishers.
The guest of honour at the four-day event is celebrated American author Bret Easton Ellis, best-known of his novel "American Psycho", who also attended the opening.
The other guest of honour at the festival is China itself which has brought along over 1,000 titles by around 70 publishers and is presenting a cross-section of its national culture to the Hungarian audience.
The Budapest festival is modelled on the prestigious Frankfurt Fair and is organised each year to coincide with World Book and Copyright Day on April 23.
