The prize first aims to recognize an important contributor to Hungary?s literary arts. AEGON has asked the editors of Hungary?s best literary journals to recommend any outstanding living Hungarian author based on a work of fiction published in the previous year. These recommendations are then submitted to a jury which includes cultural historian Eszter Babarczy, literary historian Ágnes Széchenyi, television programme editor, director and host Balázs Lévai, literary historian and critic István Margócsy, and critic and university lecturer Sándor Radnóti.
The prize carries a significant purse. But it also offers the winner a chance to recognise one other significant contributor to the arts in Hungary, whether in literature or any other area, hence the all-inclusive name Prize for Contemporary Arts.
AEGON Hungary has supported culture and the arts in Hungary for the past 15 years. In 2005, it was awarded the Whit Rose Prize for its efforts.
In autumn, AEGON will organise a series of events featuring mainly literary artists, but including work in other fields as well.
The AEGON Hungary Prize for Contemporary Arts will be awarded at the company?s headquarters at 5:00pm on May 5.
