Ági Szalóki Draws Fans in London

English

Szalóki performed many songs made famous by the great Hungarian actress Katalin Karády, who died in 1990 at the age of 79. She performed with her band, which includes Gábor Juhász, Dávid Lamm, and József Barcza Horváth.

Ági Szalóki is one of the most talented and celebrated representatives of the new generation of folk singers that burst onto the scene at the end of the 1990s, the Hungarian Cultural Centre writes in its programme guide. For several years she sang with Besh o droM, an immensely popular world music group playing all over Hungary and Europe, and with Ökrös, famous for their virtuoso interpretations of authentic Hungarian folk music. She has toured the globe with these two groups, from the Montreal Jazz Festival to the Barbican Centre in London, and the Théatre de la Ville in Paris. Her singing can be heard on over 25 albums.

Since 2005, she has been pursuing a solo career with her own musicians. Of her three solo albums released so far, two have won Fonogram 'Album of the Year' awards: for Hungarian Jazz in 2006, and for Albums for Children in 2007. Szálóki's singing style, characterized by subtle sensitivity, childlike honesty and inventiveness, has attracted attention from today's greatest Hungarian jazz musicians.
Using her folk singing technique, she has improvised at jazz concerts, both at home and abroad, together with Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Tony Lakatos and Kálmán Oláh.
