State Secretary for Culture Géza Szőcs says the event ?compresses into a single summer night the best culture can offer?.

Last year, the Night of Museums drew 191,000 visitors in Budapest and 138,000 in other cities and towns around the country.

Deputy State Secretary for Culture Judit Hammerstein said more and more institutions were becoming involved with the Night of the Museums programme each year. In addition to the Hungarian museums, one foreign one ? the City Museum of Sturovo, Slovakia, across the Danube from the Hungarian city of Esztergom ? will also participate this year, she added.

Among the highlights of the programme is a concert by the Budapest Festival Orchestra on the stairs of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. The Törley sparkling wine cellars will also open its new visitor centre for the event.

The Night of the Museums programme is full of events and activities for children. Hungarian cowboys will be on hand in Békéscsaba, equestrian acrobatics will be on display in Székesfehérvá and children can participate in a treasure hunt in Nagykanizsa. In Budapest, children can feed flesh-eating plants in the Botanical Gardens or find out if bats really have a penchant for becoming entangled in hair at the Veterinary History Collection.

Entrance to all of the venues involved with Night of the Museums in Budapest costs HUF 1,600 for adults and HUF 600 for children. Travel on the city?s public transport network is free of charge for wearers of a Night of the Museums wristband.
