Besides five fellowships offered to Hungarian musicians in the early stages of their careers, the college plans to run student exchange programmes with the participation of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
The initiative continues a tradition going back to 1957 when 300 young Hungarians escaped after the 1956 revolution and were taken in by the college for an eight-week intensive language-tuition course.
Ten Hungarian musicians who have already been participating in programmes will be attending Bard College, situated on the Hudson, during the next academic year with full scholarships.
Two Hungarian pianists, Denes Varjon and Izabella Simon, have already won fellowships and they will be followed by five more musicians from Hungary: pianist Zsolt Balogh, cellist Tamas Zetenyi, trombonist Gyorgy Gyivicsan, choir conductor Laszlo Norbert Nemes and bassoonist Zsolt Jozsef Szabo.
