American Critics Praise BFO?s ?Don Giovanni?

Even before the performances, on Thursday and Saturday, The New York Times? Anthony Tommasini wrote that he was ?looking forward? to the production of ?Don Giovanni? because ?the Hungarian conductor Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra are top-notch Mozart performers?.

Fischer, ?a vibrant, probing Mozart conductor? will bring, as a director, a production of ?Don Giovanni? to the stage that ?promises to be unusual?, Tommasini said.

Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra did not disappoint.

?The taut, fast-paced production?was like a bracing draft of crisp, cool air on a warm summer night,? said Mike Silverman, writing for the Associated Press.

?Fischer not only led the orchestra and a talented cast of soloists in a fluid, quicksilver performance of the score, he also devised the minimalist yet highly effective staging,? Silverman said, adding that the production was ?certain to be among the year?s highlights?.
Writing for New Jersey?s Star-Ledger, Ronni Reich called Fischer?s interpretation of ?Don Giovanni? ?intriguing?, noting that the BFO ?largely drove the success of the performance?.
