The prize was presented at the residence of the Hungarian Consul General in Los Angeles Balázs Bokor.
Bokor said that Ridland had made Hungarian poems sound good in English, whether they be from the Renaissance or the 20th century.
Ridland, a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has translated into English Sándor Petőfi?s classic poem John the Valiant as well as works by the Renaissance poet Bálint Balassi. He is currently at work on a translation of poems by Sándor Márai, who died in California in 1989.
A collection of Ridland?s own poems has been published in Hungarian.
