Artists to Protest Violence with Performances

Police and anti-government protesters clashed in violent demonstrations in September and October on some of Budapest?s main thoroughfares.

The event at Kálvin tér, however, is independent of politics and political parties, stresses one of the organisers, stage designer Péter Horgas.

"We believe in the healing power of culture, so we would offer this happening at a public space we have ?acquired? to the wounded city and its residents as a kind of gift basket," Horgas said.

The event, called ?Akkord?, will include performances by some 50 artists, including Kossuth Award winners Dorottya Udvaros, György Cserhalmi, Juli Básti and János Kulka. The Atlantis Theatre, Kovátsműhely, and Béla Pintér and Company will also perform.

The event will be free of charge.

Akkord is being organised by the Alternative Cultural Communities Union and the Independent Theatre Association.
