The performance of a new rock opera, Saint Stephen - The Birth of a Nation, will open the programme in Kossuth Square on Wednesday, the eve of the holiday.

On Thursday morning, the flag of the republic will be hoisted with military honours in front of Parliament, to be followed by a lot of entertainment for children, as well as a spectacular ceremony of publicly baking bread out of this year's harvest and presenting the Country Cake, which will be offered to the public to partake.

According to traditions of August 20, young officers of the Hungarian military will be sworn in on Heroes' Square. People visiting the area will then be offered music by military bands and an air show of the skills of Hungarian military pilots.

The area around the Royal Palace in the Castle District will be enlivened by an exhibition and fair of popular trades.

The day will be closed by the customary, grand fireworks above the Danube and Gellert Hill starting, as usual, at 9 pm.
