Kornél Mundruczó |
Mundruczó said the novel was about the vulnerability of people and aging, as well as about the ?impossibility of justice?.
He said the novel takes place in South Africa but is an allegory for fundamental questions concerning European identity, noting a deep-seated fear of what is different and the problems of a continent undergoing radical change.
He said it was evident across Eastern Europe that people do not want to take responsibility. ?Very often they think that everything takes place over their heads,? he explained.
Mundruczó said that he himself would encourage people to believe in the possibility of creativity and the action of civil society.
Mundruczó said it took a lot of energy to preserve artistic independence in Hungary.
?This brings us back to the basic problem of the novel: to go or to stay?? he said. ?It would be nice to stay,? he added.
After performances in Vienna and in Brussels, Mundruczó will bring the piece to Budapest?s Trafó House of Contemporary Arts on June 15.
