Bharatanatyam Dance Company Coming to Budapest

English

The company takes it name from South India?s ancient Bharatanatyam dances, which are rich in poetic movement and extremely difficult to perform: dancers must train for at least six years before achieving a basic level of proficiency. Bharatanatyam dancers require elegance, good balance, flexibility, stamina, and an excellent sense of rhythm in order to perform the dances without fault.

The dancers will be accompanied at the Stefánia Culture Centre by exotic percussion instruments, violin and flute.

The May 21 show will be the only one in Budapest for the company, which has performed to great acclaim at international dance festivals and other events.

BHARATANATYAM

Bharatanatyam is the manifestation of the South Indian idea of the celebration of the eternal universe through the celebration of the beauty of the material body. Its aim is not only to entertain, but to bring the dancers and the audience closer to this ideal. The name of the dance contains within it the words bhava (emotions), raga (melody), tala (rhythm), and natyam (dance). Bharata Natyam has two distinct elements: Nritta, rhythmic movements of purely aesthetic value, and abhinaya, movements in which gestures or facial expressions are emphasized.
