Each year, India turns out about a thousand feature films, of which, with a little bit of luck, one may come to Hungary. Hungarians don?t know what they?re missing, but Indians living in Hungary do. And more and more of them have made it their mission to bring their favourite Indian films to Hungary.
Bollywood ? a moniker for India?s Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry ? produced about 200 feature films last year. These were shown not just in India, but in the UK, the US, the Middle East, Germany and even Romania.
The Örökmozgó cinema will show those Indian films which have received the greatest acclaim in India. Of the most popular fifty Hindi-language films of the last three years, it will show four, offering a kind of Bollywood almanac.
Amitabh Bachchan, India?s most recognised star, will show his talents in the Caretaker. Bachchan, who has been in almost 170 films recently won the Screen Weekly prize together with his co-star Hema Malini.
Don Bombay promises a real parade of stars: leads Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Wars and Boman Irani are all prize-winning actors. The film has proven so popular that tamil- and telugu-language versions have been made, and a sequel is planned for August, 2006. Hollywood is also doing a remake of Don Bombay.
The comedy One Liar, A Hundred Liars stars Bipashua Basu and Esha Deol, whose characters show how India?s beautiful women are ?raised?. The film?s music ? an integral element of all Bollywood films ? is written by Anu Malik and Salim-Sulaiman. Indeed, one cannot travel to India without hearing the film?s theme song.
Shah Rukh Khan, India?s Brad Pitt, and Rani Mukherji star in the bittersweet love story Neither With Nor Without You. The Örökmozgó recommends one more film with the co-stars: Paheli, a love story based on a novel by Vijayadan Detha, which will open the series at the Uránia Theatre.
