Budapest Bath Operator Commissions Play

English

"We have commissioned a contemporary Hungarian playwright to script a play set in the Gellért baths, to be performed there Friday and Saturday nights," said Budapest Gyógyvizei Zrt. CEO Tibor Ferenci. He declined to name the author as the contract for the deal has not yet been signed.

The company has also invited a Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian author to hold readings in the baths, Ferenci said.

Budapest's world-famous mineral water baths are suffering the effects of the economic crisis and Budapest Gyógyvizei Zrt. is looking for ways to boost visitor numbers.

"We want to open up to culture," Ferenci said.

Already, the Gellért baths have been the venue for film screenings organised by Cinetrip, and the Dagály baths have hosted pop concerts.

Budapest Gyógyvizei Zrt. took a cue from the annual Night of Museums and for the first time last year kept some baths open late into the evening on a night in June. The event will be repeated this year, on June 19.
