The company will bring the story of Sir John first to the Pinggu District of Beijing on Friday. The performance will be followed by another in the Shijingshan District.
Petőfi is a familiar name in China, where several of his poems - among them Nemzeti Dal (National Song) and Szabadság, Szerelem (Liberty, Love) - are required reading. The Hungarian Cultural Season in China has even been dubbed "Freedom, love", after Petőfi's famous poem.
Petőfi's life works were published in Chinese in 1998, translated by the literary historian Xiang Wansheng, who died in July.
The Budapest Puppet Theatre is no stranger to China, having performed both in Beijing and Shanghai in the summer of 2004.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány opened the Hungarian Season in China at a ceremony in Beijing on Sunday. Freedom, Love will present Hungary's economy, culture and tourism industry to the Chinese at a series of events lasting until the spring of next year. It will focus on four cities in China: Beijing and Shanghai in 2007, and Hong Kong and Shenzen in 2008.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány unveiled a bust of Petőfi in Shanghai.
