Concept of the memorial

The contest attracted 64 artists from Hungary, Poland, Germany and Norway. It was won by two Hungarian artists, Geza Szeri-Varga and Zoltan Szeri-Varga, whose design was supported by the majority of the jury, including all Polish experts, Attila Zsigmond said.

After the awarding ceremony, Budapest Mayor Gabor Demszky said that this would be the first monument dedicated to the Katyn martyrs outside Poland. "Recalling the memory of the Katyn massacre, one of the gravest crimes committed by one of the totalitarian regimes is important for Hungarians too," he said.

If all goes to plan, the memorial will be completed by the spring of 2010.
