Judit Tamási, the recently resigned chair of the National Office of Cultural Heritage, said at the opening of the exhibition entitled Common Space ? Common Heritage that Hungary?s office maintained close links with heritage protection organisations in neighbouring countries. History has shown that cultural heritage is stronger than dictatorships, she said. The exhibition aims to introduce to MEPs masterworks of European culture with the help of photographs, she added.

Former deputy speaker of the European Parliament Tőkés said the exhibition demonstrated that common cultural heritage overrides political borders. A need to face up with the past has survived in Europe but the current exhibition is a constructive and peaceful event which is intended ?to enrich the great family of peoples and nations by demonstrating that national treasures are part of European and world heritage,? he added.

Italian MEP Marco Scurria and Polish MEP Piotr Borys also delivered speeches, talking about the importance of culture in European integration.

The exhibition is in the wing of the building named after former Hungarian Prime Minister József Antall. It will later show at the Balassi Institute in Brussels.
