The György Kepes Arts Centre will house some 200 pieces of art that Kepes, who was born near Eger, bequeathed to the city in 1991.

One of the objectives of establishing the centre is to provide an appropriate venue to show these works, said István Kaczári, chairman of the centre?s operator, the Complex Culture Research Foundation. The decision not to call the centre a ?museum? was intentional as its main purpose will be to promote knowledge and provide education and training, he added.

The centre?s home will be in a former youth centre undergoing a 588 million forint renovation.

It will house paintings, photographs, light statues and photograms, grouped chronologically. The core of the exhibition will be made up of work by Kepes and his contemporaries. A museum of light art featuring the work of Hungarian and foreign artists will occupy the top floor of the three-storey building.

The Complex Culture Research Foundation has signed an agreement to operate the venue for a period of 15 years.
