Centre Launches Holocaust Memorial Year 65 Programme

English

Each month, the centre will focus on a specific topic, such as collaboration, the ghetto and the National Socialists, while at the same time chronologically following the Holocaust in Hungary.

The programmes planned during Holocaust Memorial Year 65 are colourful and multi-layered, both in terms of type and of content, said the historian László Csősz at the press conference launching the year. In addition to educational programmes and conferences for historians, there will be many cultural events.

The centre will post historical and educational materials on its website, some of it, such as Picture of the Month and Parallel Life Stories, specifically intended to help students independently learn about the Holocaust. Lesson plans will be posted for each of the monthly topics, said educational programme organiser Tibor Pécsi. Tenders supporting the study of local history will also be called for students.

Literary programmes will play a big part in Holocaust Memorial Year 65, said literary historian Katalin Pécsi. Writers such as Antal Szerb, Miklós Radnóti and Imre Kertész will be in the focus.

Holocaust Memorial Year 65 will officially open on January 27, International Holocaust Memorial Day. The theme for the first month of the year will be "living side by side". In the spirit of the topic, Dániel Hamar and Mihály Sipos of the folk ensemble Muzsikás will show how Hungarian, Jewish and Gypsy music have influenced each other.
