The cultural industry is developing dynamically all around the world; for this reason we look with great interest on the European Capital of Culture programme, as part of which Pécs will be one of the cities to carry the title in 2010. We would like to attach ourselves in some form to the organisation of Pécs's programme, said Pao-lung Hsia, a Chinese Communist Party official from Zhejiang, speaking after the meeting. The details have yet to be worked out, but it is possible that the public could even see a Chinese production in Pécs in 2010, he added.

Hsia said that, in addition to culture, his delegation sees real possibilities in the area of economic cooperation. A joint tourism programme between Zhejiang and the area around Pécs could be started. Cooperation could also take place in the areas of heavy and light industry, in the energy sector and in the trade sector.

Ferenc Wekler, chairman of the South Transdanubian Regional Development Council, noted that the Baranya County Council, which has its seat in Pécs, has maintained a relationship with the province of Zhejiang for three years. The region, which has 46 million inhabitants, is one of Hungary's fastest growing, in terms of economy, he added. Its annual GDP exceeds an annual USD 250bn.

Wekler said the Chinese connection offers many possibilities for Pécs and the region. For this reason, it is important to work out a means of cooperation which goes beyond diplomacy, creating new joint projects and programmes.
