One of the films on the five-day programme, Jafar Panahi?s ?Offside? (2006), which illustrates the neglect of women?s rights in contemporary Iran, has been playing regularly at the Cirko-Gejzír since November 2.
Director Babak Payami?s film ?One More Day? (1999) presents the story of a forbidden love affair in modern Tehran.
?Djomeh? (2000), by Hassan Yektapanah, is about a young Afghan man, Djomeh, who faces discrimination and disdain working a menial job in Iran. Even his countryman, Habib, who has taken him in, looks down upon him. But Djomeh?s employer shows him kindness, and it is he to whom Djomeh turns to intercede when he looks to ask for the hand of a local woman in marriage.
?It?s Winter? (2006), by director Rafi Pitts, is a neorealist look at living and working conditions on the outskirts of Tehran.
Babak Payami?s ?Void Votes? (2001) tells the story of a vote-collector and her escort and the absurd events they become a part of on election day.
The programme will conclude with the award-winning film ?The Circle? (2000) by Jafar Panahi. The film shows the struggle of various women to function in contemporary Iran?s oppressive sexist society.
