The 84-year-old composer's achievement "as musician, teacher, but first of all as composer, is outstanding in contemporary music," the jury said.
At the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday, Gyorgy Kurtag performed excerpts of his piano piece "Games" together with his wife Marta.
The paper described the elderly master as a composer who managed to achieve "maximum effect with a minimum of notes".
