Hiller was invited to Dubrovnik for a two-day official visit to Croatia to be the guest of honour at the opening of the 59th Dubrovnik Summer Festival on Thursday evening. He was joined by Croatian head of state Stipe Mesic and other important Croatian politicians.

The Croatian education and cultural centre - which will be the Croatia's most important institution in Hungary - is being established with the support of both Croatia and Hungary, Hiller said.

The two culture ministers also discussed Croatia's participation in Pécs's 2010 European Capital of Culture programme. Croatia will bring theatre productions, contemporary art exhibitions and classical music performances to the festival. The Croatian Theatre of Pécs will also perform.

Hiller also met with Dubrovnik mayor Dubravka Suica and discussed presenting the Croatian city in Budapest in 2011, when Hungary takes over the revolving European Union presidency.

Hiller noted that Hungary has had a cultural attaché in Zagreb, Lídia Jósvai, since the start of 2008.

Hungary is well represented at this year's Dubrovnik Summer Festival. On the programme are the young Hungarian trumpet player Gábor Boldoczki, who will perform with the Varsovia Symphony; the Croatian-Hungarian pianist Danijel Detoni, who graduated from the Liszt Music Academy in Budapest in 2007; and the Hungarian city of Debrecen's Csokonai Theatre, which will perform the comedy Drzic Dundo Maroje.
