To commemorate the treaty which laid the foundation for today's European Union, masterpieces from each of the EU's 27 member states will be shown at the exhibition, to take place in Rome.

The opening will be attended by Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller, who will also visit the Hungarian Academy in Rome, which is undergoing renovations scheduled to be completed in June.

Csontváry (1853-1919) painted The Solitary Cedar exactly 100 years ago. Today considered to be one of Hungary's most important painters, Csontváry's oeuvre became the property of Gedeon Gerlóczy after the artist's death.

The National Bank of Hungary purchased The Solitary Cedar in 1994. In 2005 it was loaned to the Csontváry Museum in Pécs, southwest Hungary.
