Czech Philharmonic to Perform Mahler, Martinu at MUPA

Under the baton of Zdenk Mácal, the orchestra will perform Martin's Symphony No. 1, H. 289, and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major ("The Titan").

 
Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) composed all six of his symphonies in the United States, where he had fled the Nazis. The first was dedicated to the late wife of his friend Serge Koussevitzky, the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Gustav Mahler, who was director of the Hungarian Royal Opera House from 1888 until 1891, premiered his Symphony No. 1 in Budapest on November 20, 1889.
