Harangozó, born April 19, 1908, brought such outstanding productions to the stage as the Miraculous Mandarin, The Wooden Prince and Sheherezade. He also choreographed the dance elements of the operas Háry János and Bánk Bán, as well as the Adventures of Huszti by Pál Kadosa.
The Hungarian State Opera will present a two-part programme commemorating Harangozó on April 19 and 20. On the programme will be the Miraculous Mandarin and a performance to the music of Johann Strauss.
The Hungarian National Ballet will present a Harangozó Memorial Ring to recognize an outstanding member of the dance profession. The ballet's Arts Council has already decided who the prize will go to this year: Béla Balogh, whose talents were perhaps best revealed in Harangozó productions such as Coppelia. Balogh will perform in the Hungarian State Opera's special memorial programmme on April 19.
The Hungarian Dance Association will place a wreathe at a plaque on Balogh's former flat at Liszt tér 10 on April 10. Kossuth Prize-winning ballet dancer Zsuzsa Kun as well as Tamás Juronics, another Kossuth Prize-winner, will remember Harangozó at the ceremony.
