Director János Taub Dies at 82

 János Taub

Taub was born in Halmi in Transylvania on May 14, 1927. He worked as a director in Timisoara after graduating from the Szentgyörgyi István Theatre Institute in 1954. He was the chief director of the Cluj Napoca Hungarian State Theatre from 1962. From 1971, he was a member of the Bulandra Theatre in Bucharest as well as a teacher at the capital's Theatre and Film Academy. In 1981, he emigrated to Tel Aviv, where he worked as a director in Habima and Kameri. He also taught at the University of Tel Aviv.

 
He moved to Hungary in 1986. His productions of Géza Páskándy's Visitors at the Játékszín won him kudos from audiences and critics alike. He followed up with a production of The Braggart Soldier in the Radnóti Theatre and A Hundred Years of Solitude in Szolnok.
 
Taub's production of Striptease has been on the Komédium programme ever since its premiere.
 
Taub was a founding member of the Művész Theatre, where he staged The Beggar's Opera, as well as a number of contemporary and classical works. His adaptations of Paradise Lost, The Tempest and Jeanne d'Arc in the Vígszínház in Budapest were especially memorable, as well as Liliom in Szolnok, which starred the renowned actors Dezső Garas and Mari Törőcsik.
 
On a recommendation by actors, István Márta invited him to work in the Új Theatre where he staged The Chioggia Scuffles in 1998, and Anthem and The Fire Raisers two years later.
 
The Ministry of Education and Culture, the Komédium Theatre and the Új Theatre mourn the loss of one of their own.
