The grand synagogue of the period of King Matthias situated in Tancsics Street was discovered in 1964 and has been awaiting excavation ever since. The hour-long film directed by Gyula Rado and produced by Istvan Bubryak emphasises the sociological and historical value of the building for the whole of Hungarian society, the filmmakers said.
Former head of the Academy of Sciences Szilveszter E Vizi, who last year supported a civil initiative to excavate the synagogue, figures in the documentary. He also supports a plan to build a museum over the excavated site, pointing out its exceptional potential as a tourist attraction.
The documentary will be shown later on public television.
