Zsolt Pava, of the main opposition Fidesz party, said that he had made a verbal agreement with Placido Domingo on the title. Domingo will not be required to do anything, but he will give his name to the programme, Pava added.
The programme has several local ambassadors who promote the city during their travels around the world, Pava said. However, the city leaders also want to get the support of international stars, such as Domingo, he added.
Pecs will be the 2010 European Capital of Culture together with Essen and Istanbul.
