Senior editor of Book World Ron Charles writes in the Washington Post that Dragomán "creates a nostalgic childhood, full of...games and pranks...but in the dark days of Ceausescu's police state, the atmosphere is so poisoned, physically and psychologically, that boys' make-believe dangers constantly risk becoming deadly."
The White King is a collection of connected short stories inspired by Dragomán's experiences growing up in Romania in the 1980s - "a world that seems designed by Joseph Stalin and Roald Dahl".
The White King has been published in more than 20 countries. The English translation is by Paul Olchváry and published by Houghton Mifflin.
