The renovation was one of the biggest cultural projects Veszprém has seen in many years, mayor László Dióssy said at the opening ceremony.

Gordon Bajnai, the government?s chief development advisor, said the project could help make Veszprém a cultural centre in Europe.

The renovation of the Dubniczay Palace was paid for in part with HUF 718 million in European Union funding.

Károly László, born in the Hungarian city of Pécs in 1923 and currently a resident of Basel, agreed to lend his collection of 214 works by important Hungarian and foreign artists to the museum for five years. The collection includes works by Lajos Kassák, István Beöthy, László Moholy-Nagy, Marcello Morandini and Francis Picabia. In recognition of his generous loan, László was made an honorary citizen of Veszprém.

In addition to the Károly László collection, the palace will house the Tegularium, a collection of bricks from the Hungarian Building Industry Museum.
