The Duna Art Ensemble will perform some of the best pieces from its repertoire, choreographed by Zoltán Farkas, Gábor Mihályi and Zsolt Juhász, at the Duna Palace on April 25. An exhibition of photographs of past performances will also be shown, and Péter Novák will hold a roundtable discussion with former ensemble members accompanied by film footage.
The ensemble will perform three pieces from 1992 and a work from 2003 entitled Peasant Decameron for the 50 Years of the Duna Ensemble gala at the National Dance Theater on April 28, and it will perform pieces from 2002-2006 at the Palace of Culture on May 20.
The ensemble of 24 dancers and a 5-member folk orchestra started performing on a boat moored near the Chain Bridge in 1957. Supported by the Interior Ministry, the ensemble developed new choreographies which showed a modern approach to traditional folk dance. It also placed a special emphasis on dramatic works and dance theatre, characterized by a mixture of respect for tradition and artistic experimentation.
The ensemble has since set up the Duna Dance Workshop, which provides its members with a venue to experiment.
