Dürer's 'Triumphal March of Maximillian' to be Shown in Szentendre

English

The prints were acquired by the Slovakian museum from the collection of Imre Henszlmann (1813-1888), who lived in Kosice, which belonged to Hungary at the time. Henszlmann studied to become a physician, but turned his life?s efforts to art, archaeology and the protection of monuments. He amassed a vast collection of art, including almost 1,200 graphic works, and was a founder of Kosice's Association of Northern Hungarian Museums. Parts of his collection have already been shown in Hungary, but never the ?Triumphal March of Maximillian?.

Maximillian I commissioned Dürer to portray his achievements through a monumental series of allegorical illustrations: the ?Triumphal March?, ?Triumphal Car? and ?Triumphal Arch?. The series was completed before the emperor died in 1519.

The current exhibition, called ?Albrecht Dürer and His Age? also presents 17 additional works by Dürer, as well as 42 works by work by Dürer's contemporaries, including ones by Altdorfer, Cranach, Wohlgemuth, Schongauer, Schäufelein, Burgkmair, Springinklee and Beck.

The Szentendre Picture Gallery is located in Szentendre, north of Budapest, at 2-5 Fő tér.
The gallery is open from 09:00 - 17:00 every day except Monday.
?Albrecht Dürer and His Age? runs from 31 March to 28 May 2006
