El Greco exhibition opens at Museum of Fine Arts

English

The centre piece of the exhibition running until February 5 is El Greco's Saint John the Evangelist panel borrowed from the Prado in Madrid, alongside works selected from the Museum of Fine Arts' own collection

Museum director Laszlo Baan said at the opening that the Museum of Fine Arts has one of the largest Spanish collections outside the Prado, so this exhibition offers an opportunity to throw light on El Greco's roots and show works that influenced  him. Paintings, sculptures and engravings from Italian masters, such as Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Bossano, are also on show.

The exhibition is part of the Geniuses and Masterpieces series launched by the Museum of Fine Arts in 2006, the centennial year of its establishment. Past shows in the series featured works by Picasso, Caravaggio and Titian.
