Eleni Korani, one of the gallery?s owners said three world famous museums ? among them New York?s Metropolitan Museum of Art ? were in the bidding for the plates, which were put on the block at Christie?s on June 21.
Éva Csenkey, curator in charge of ceramics at the Museum of Applied Arts, said the museum had been sent pictures of the plates by Christie?s along with a letter long before the auction.
The plates ? two large serving plates and two dessert plates ? were painted using glaze, then fired at 1,280 degrees Celsius. The plates bear the mark of the Zsolnay factory and the laboratory numbers may still be seen on the two smaller plates..
