Estonian Hungarian Association Celebrates Anniversary

The association's founders took advantage of a loophole in the former Soviet Socialist Republic's Association Act to establish the organisation two decades earlier, making it one of the first NGOs in the country.

Most of the founders were ethnic Hungarians from the Lower Carpathian region who studied at Estonia's Tartu University and settled in the country after graduation. Over the years, the association's members organised language courses, summer camps for children and trips to Hungary.

Hungarian Ambassador to Estonia József Víg and Hungarian Institute in Tallinn director Gyula Dávid greeted the 200 revellers at the event, which was also joined by members of the Association of Hungarians Living in Finland - which turned 15 this year.
