Exhibition Recalls German Unity at Lake Balaton

English

The exhibition was opened by State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture Ferenc Csák. Matthias Platzeck, who heads the federal state of Brandenburg, and Péter Forgács, who was the project's artistic director.

The exhibition, called German Unity on Lake Balaton - The Private History of German Unity, was the brainchild of Collegium Hungaricum director János Can Togay. An invitation to witnesses of reunions at Lake Balaton under communism to document their memories was made in the summer of 2008. About 50 people responded, and their stories were complemented by documents compiled by archive researchers in both Hungary and Germany.

The exhibition can be seen at the Collegium Hungaricum until January 15, 2010. Afterward, it will travel to Cottbus and Dortmund, then to Budapest before coming full circle to Lake Balaton.
