Many of the most famous figures in Hungary's history have had big moustaches, and many Hungarian men today carry on the tradition.
The jury found Kumer's moustache the biggest and the fullest and awarded it the "Grand Moustache" prize. The 30-year-old American will get two airline tickets to Budapest for his efforts, said Deputy Director of the Hungarian Cultural Centre in New York Eszter Gyárfás.
The contest, which started on February 1 in Brooklyn's Radegast Hall and Biergarten and ended in the same place, involved 60 participants, including six women.
Among the women, who "grew moustaches" a bit differently than the men, Liz Rimer was named the winner. The sisters Nina and Aya were also acknowledged for the most artistic moustache: a metre-and-a-half long piece of textile covered with traditional Hungarian patterns.
The Hungarian András Révész won the prize for the most "professional" moustache. (Participants in the category did not have to start growing their moustaches on February 1, as did the others.)
The members of the jury included the painter Michael Benjamin, the art critic and historian Ágnes Berecz, the writer-producer Janet Ginsburg and the master barber Michael W. Haar.
The guest of honour was Viktor Polgár, Hungary's Chief Consul in New York, who also sported a full Hungarian moustache to the event.
