Few Films Speak to Children in 2008

English

The Three Robbers

The Tale of Despereaux - a princess-and-dragon, or rather princess-and-rat, story --opened on December 25, drawing children on their winter break. As in a classic fairy, the film isn't just fun and games but bears a message that one must not always accept the fate that circumstances would seem to demand. Despereaux cannot follow the rules of the society in which he lives, just as several other characters in the film cannot follow the rule of the societies they live in. The "fairy tale" looks a little like a Hollywood thriller at times, but still stays true to the form of a classic children's story.

The Three Robbers, based on a book by Tomi Ungerer, also does its part to teach children something: how to overcome their fears. The film speaks to even the youngest of viewers, both in content and form.

Horton

Though most of the other children's films that Hungarian audiences saw in 2008 had their merits - films such as Madagascar 2, Horton Hears a Who, Kung Fu Panda and Wall-E - they pandered to the party paying the price of the ticket.
