And not just in literature class. The ministry says the film, which deals with nepotism and corruption in a small town, and is based on Zsigmond Móricz?s novel of the same title, provides useful discussion material for history and media classes.
To guide discussions, deputy chair of the Association of Hungarian Literature Teachers György D. Fenyő has prepared a workbook, which InterCom will send to secondary schools. The workbook is also available online at www.intercom.hu/rokonok. Similar educational materials have been prepared for two Hungarian films in the past: ?Fateless?, based on Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertesz?s novel about growing up during the Holocaust, and ?Dealer?, which examines the issue of drug abuse.
Szabó?s new film ? the first Hungarian film he has made since 1992 ? is not the first screen adaptation of Móricz?s popular novel: Félix Máriássy, Szabó?s teacher at the Film Academy, made the first in 1952 . Szabó wrote the screenplay for ?Relatives? with the help of Andrea Vészits, the great granddaughter of the novelist.
