The figure is down from the 25 per year releases Alexander van Dulmen said his company planned to maintain in the autumn of 2009 after A Company acquired a 51pc stake in Budapest Film Kft. Budapest Film Kft controls about 10pc of Hungary's film distribution market.

Under A Company plans, Budapest Film will expand video-on-demand provider filmklik.hu as well as sales to television channels, he said.

They also consider the continued distribution of art films and Hungarian films as very important, and will maintain this profile too, Mr Dulmen and new Budapest Film Kft CEO Lorand Poich said.

The German company acquired a majority stake in the distributing unit of Budapest Film Zrt. The latter company, which operates art movies in the capital, remained 100pc owned by the Budapest local council as before.
