German Papers Praise Eötvös Opera Premiere

"The orchestra reminds one at times of artful film music. The music always retains something secret. It does not impose itself, although the presence on the stage might suggest otherwise," said Lisa Sonnabend, writing for the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

"In the end, the audience at the premiere is surprisingly gracious. There is no booing. Nor is there any frenzied cheering. Rather the applause is as harmonic and determined as the music of Eötvös."

Manuel Brug, writing for Die Welt, praised the way Eötvös let the libretto, by Albert Ostermaier, speak. "Above all, Eötvös has made a habit of allowing the libretto to dominate his finely wrought music," he said.
