The German Stage of Hungary

In the early 1980s, Hungary established a number of theatres for many of its ethnic minorities. The German Stage was set up in 1983 in a small room at Szekszárd's Mihály Babits Community Centre, Heinek said. In the early 1990s, it moved to an old cinema, which was converted into a theatre with financial support from Germany. The cinema was opened by Hungary's president at the time Árpád Göncz.

The theatre's first directors at the new venue were András Frigyesi, Zsuzsa Dávid and Claudia Novitny. Then Ildikó Frank took over, becoming the youngest stage director in Hungary. Frank still heads the German Stage, well into her second five-year contract.

The German Stage performs the most important works of German theatre and takes them on tour to areas of Hungary that have large ethnic German populations, such as Mór, Veszprém, Pécs and Budaörs.
The theatre is supported with an annual HUF 42 million from the local council and another HUF 21 million from the German Council of Hungary.
