The courtyard of Gyula?s impressive castle, the oldest one made of brick still standing in Central Europe, will be the venue for some of Europe?s finest Shakespeare productions, selected by a panel of experts.
The programme boasts four productions of ?Hamlet?: by Lithuania?s Meno Fortas, directed by E. Nekrošius, on July 12; by the Theatrical University of Budapest, directed by Andor Lukáts, on July 14; by the Georgian Rustaveli National Theatre, directed by Robert Sturua, on July 15; and by Budapest?s Bárka Theatre, directed by Tim Carroll, on July 16. Carroll will also lead a master course at the festival.
The festival?s other productions include the premiere of director András Dömötör?s ?Twelfth Night or Who Cares?, a joint production of the Gyula Castle Theatre, the István Örkény Theatre and the Szentendre Teátrum, on July 4; director Vladislav Troickij?s ?Foreword to III Richard?, performed by the DAH Theatre of Kiev; and the Madhouse Theatre Company?s ?The Complete Works of W. Shakespeare?. The Győr Ballet will present ?Macbeth? on a stage next to the castle on July 16, and the renowned King?s Singers from the UK will appear on July 13.
Additional events will include roundtable discussions of Hamlet, film screenings and concerts; and two of Gyula?s restaurants will offer a menu from Shakespeare?s times.
