The building, designed by Ferenc Cságoly and Ferenc Keller, was picked from 235 applications from 18 countries. The prize carries a EUR 21,000 purse.
?The winning project?integrates itself skilfully in its historical surroundings in Pécs. It convinces with its intelligent as well as sensible disagreement with the location?.The building, completed in 2004, is not only an example of the exclusive use of brick. More importantly, it demonstrates the essential contribution brick presents for the implementation of architectural goals,? Wienerberger writes on its corporate website.
The biennial award, presented for the second time this year, was decided on by a jury of such well-known architects and architectural critics as Bob Van Reet, Falk Jaeger, Tamás Noll, Sjoerd Soeters and the winner of the 2004 "Brick Award" Josef Pleskot.
German architectural publishers Callwey has put out an illustrated book with the best 38 applications for the award. Among the 38 are two more Hungarian buildings in addition to Barbakán House: the Toldy Grammar School and the Pannonhalma winery.
