The translation is the first of Gerlóczy's novel, which is about his school years. It was published by Ulpius Ház in Hungary.
The Italian writer Domenico Starnore, who has also written a book about his school years, will present Gerlóczy's book at the launch. A talk afterward with Gerlóczy will be moderated by Carlotta Mismetti Capua, who writes for La Republica.
Gerlóczy wrote Excused Absence when he was 20 years old. It recalls an eventful childhood, with humour and a unique style. A "bad pupil" who failed to graduate from high school, Gerlóczy has since written two books and is working on his third.
Gerlóczy, who is now 25, is following a family tradition: among his relatives are the poet and translator Lajos Áprily (1887-1967) and the writer, poet and translator Zoltán Jékely (1913-1982).
Excused Absence spent months on Hungary's bestseller list, selling 30,000 copies.
