Hungarian Cellist to Teach in Frankfurt

English

László Fenyő

has been the first chair cellist for the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra since 2001 while at the same time taking on private students. He said he has been in talks with the city's music school for a year on a teaching position.

"The decision was made without any advance notice, so I had to take part in an entrance examination the next day," Fenyő said.

Fenyő will continue to perform in the Frankfurt Radio Symphony's chamber music series. And in September, he will play at the Kronberg Cello Festival and Academy, where workshops and concerts with the likes of Gary Hoffman, Steven Isserlis, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Krzysztof Penderecki, Perényi Miklós, Ilan Volkov and Pieter Wispelwey will take place. Fenyő will perform the cello concerto of Freidrich Gulda, who died in 2000, at the festival.

Fenyő recently finished teaching a master course in the Romanian city of Timisoara. He has received invitations to perform in the city for five years, but was asked to teach a master course for the first time last year.

Fenyő plays few concerts in Hungary, but - thanks to the Klassz Music Office -- will perform Haydn trios with the violinist Kristóf Baráti and the pianist Ákos Hernádi at Budapest's Palace of Arts early in October.

Fenyő was put into the Liszt Music Academy's preparatory programme after winning a national cello competition at the age of 13. After his studies at the academy, he went to Lübeck, where he learned under David Geringas and received his diploma in 1997. Between 1991 and 200, Fenyő received prizes in nine competitions.
