Galavics was among 24 finalists picked from 133 submissions from 34 countries. He competed against two other clarinettists as well as pianists, violinists, cellists, saxophonists, flautists and a singer.
In addition to his third prize, Galavics won an award for best woodwind player which comes with a purse and the chance to perform in the UK. He will appear as a guest performer with the Southampton Symphonic Orchestra in the 2010/2011 season.
Galavics earned his degree from the Liszt Music Academy in 2006. He started the academy's graduate programme on scholarship this year.
The winner of the Haverhill Sinfonia competition was 39-year-old soprano Joo Cho from South Korea. The runner-up was the Australian pianist Michael Lerache.
