Although Szegedi did not make it to the finals of the contest, he said the experience was worthwhile.

Szegedi also received invitations to audition at two of the world's leading opera houses: the New York Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden in London.

The jury, whose members included the singer Giacomo Aragall , the conductor Richard Bonynge and his wife, soprano Gwyneth Jones, the pianist Helmut Deutsch, the mezzo soprano Anne Murray, manager of the Metropolitan Opera Lenore Rosenberg and Welsh National Opera director John Fisher, said Szegedi's selections in the song category were "too tiring". He sang works by Kodály, Schumann, Haydn and Richard Strauss.
