Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller, Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz, and Balassi Institute director Éva Lauter will deliver inauguration speeches at the two-day conference, which starts on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry of Education and Culture, Hungary's cultural institutions abroad offered more than 2,200 programmes last year, many of them connected to the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Hungary has 19 cultural institutions abroad, in Vienna, Berlin, Brussels, Bucharest, Delhi, Helsinki, Cairo, London, Moscow, New York, Paris, Bratislava, Sfântu Gheorghe, Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Sofia, Tallinn and Warsaw. The Ministry of Education and Culture also plans to set up a network of cultural attachés, independent from the Foreign Ministry, in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tel-Aviv, Zagreb and Belgrade by the end of the year.
In May, the Ministry invited applications for Hungarian cultural institute directors in Rome, Cairo and Berlin. A committee appointed by the ministry will evaluate the applications, which must be submitted by Saturday. The winner will be selected within 30 days of the deadline.
